The Gram Panchayat is the basic unit of local self-governance in rural India, responsible for ensuring the overall development and smooth administration of villages. It is headed by a Sarpanch and supported by elected Panch members who represent different wards of the village. The Gram Sabha, comprising all adult villagers, plays a key role in decision-making and approving developmental plans. The Gram Panchayat manages essential services such as water supply, sanitation, street lighting, rural roads, and the implementation of various government welfare schemes. It also maintains transparency through regular meetings, ensuring public participation in village governance. Funded by government grants, local taxes, and other income sources, the Gram Panchayat works towards improving education, health facilities, infrastructure, and livelihood opportunities, thereby strengthening democracy at the grassroots level and promoting sustainable rural development.
